Rossinière, jewel of alpine architecture
With its architectural heritage, natural products and invigorating walks, the authentic village de Rossinière has it all.
Rossinière (930 m) in Pays-d’Enhaut is known for its many wooden chalets and their carved, painted facades. A themed walk introduces visitors to the traditional architectural heritage for which this village is renowned.
The Grand Chalet is the most remarkable, with its massive carved facade over five floors with 113 windows. It was completed in 1756 by a prominent cheese-maker who built generous cellars for maturing cheese. In 1977, the painter Balthus (1908-2001) moved into the Grand Chalet with his family where he received the most celebrated writers, painters and artists of the 20th century.
Lovers of alpine flavours are also drawn to the terraced herb gardens of Jardin des Monts, in the Mont-Dessous mountain pastures, to sample the syrups, herbal teas and cosmetics produced here.
The GoldenPass train takes its passengers on a panoramic journey back in time through the beautiful scenery of Rossinière and Pays-d’Enhaut.
